Use of the personal data collected

Comments

When you leave a comment on our website, the data entered in the comment form, as well as your IP address and browser user agent, are collected to help us detect spam comments.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once your comment has been approved, your profile picture will be publicly visible alongside your comment.

Media

If you are a registered user and upload images to the website, we recommend that you avoid uploading images containing EXIF GPS location data. Visitors to your website can download and extract location data from these images.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may choose to save your name, email address and website in cookies. This is for your convenience so that you do not have to enter this information again when you leave another comment. These cookies expire after one year.

If you visit the login page, a temporary cookie will be created to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and is automatically deleted when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will set several cookies to save your login information and screen display preferences. Login cookies last for two days, and screen preference cookies last for one year. If you select “Remember me”, your login cookie will be kept for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookie will be deleted.

When you edit or publish a post, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data. It simply indicates the ID of the post you have just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (such as videos, images and articles). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the visitor had visited that other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed third-party tracking tools and track your interactions with embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to their website.

Statistics and audience measurement

Use and sharing of your personal data

How long your data is stored

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This allows us to recognise and automatically approve subsequent comments instead of holding them in the moderation queue.

For users who register on our website (if this is possible), we also store the personal information provided in their profile. All users can view, edit or delete their personal information at any time (except their username). Website administrators can also view and edit this information.

Your rights over your data

If you have an account or have left comments on the site, you may request a file containing all the personal data we hold about you, including the data you have provided to us. You may also request the deletion of your personal data. This does not include data stored for administrative, legal or security purposes.

Transmission of your personal data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
